5 Tips to Keep Saffron Fresh

There are many reasons for storing saffron in the right way, let alone that it is the costliest spice in the world.

No matter what form of saffron you are using, you can make your investment worthwhile and increase its shelf life by taking certain precautions and preservation methods into account after you purchase this magical spice.

Moreover, you can continue to take advantage of saffron's astonishing medicinal properties and exceptional flavor, aroma, and color in your meals for up to two years if you follow the given below tips.

1. Avoid moisture and humidity 

Moisture and humidity are the two biggest enemies of saffron, which notably reduces its property, quality, and efficacy in a short span of time. Always preserve saffron in a cool, dark, and dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.

2. Use airtight containers

The container where you store your saffron matters a lot when you are trying to maintain its freshness. Make sure that the container is clean, airtight, and doesn't allow air to circulate and moisture to penetrate.

Also, you can divide the saffron into smaller containers to ensure less air and moisture contact. Furthermore, avoid opening the saffron container frequently to maximize its effectiveness.

3. Correct temperature

It is recommended to store saffron at a temperature between 15 and 20 degrees celsius and with optimal humidity of around 40 percent.

4. Don't store saffron in the refrigerator

Don't store the saffron in the refrigerator, especially when you are planning to use the saffron regularly.

This is because the temperature difference induced when moving the saffron in and out of the refrigerator will create condensation inside the container, which will, in turn, increase the moisture level and deteriorate the qualities of saffron. 

5. Avoid sunlight 

Saffron is highly sensitive to natural and artificial light, and if exposed for longer durations, it can lose its characteristic aroma and color.

Therefore, either store it in a container that obstructs light or wrap the saffron in aluminum foil before storing it in the container.

It is also advised to place the container in an enclosed kitchen cabinet, more preferably under your kitchen countertop.
